Hiking in Colombia:Jardin Antioquia

Updated 2020, Jardin is open for visitors again!                               Jardin, Antioquia, Colombia is one of the most beautiful pueblos (small colonial towns) located in the department of Antioquia, about 4 hours from Medellin with some of the best hiking in Colombia. You can find our Travel Guide to Jardín here.Jardin is famous for its unchanged appearance and virtually preserved colonial appearance (since it designation as a parish in 1871). It’s mountain views surround the town while it enclosed manicured gardens and lush green vegetation (hence the name Jardin) thanks to its year round spring-like climate. Jardin is a designated Pueblo de Patrimonio – a colonial town designated by Colombia for tourism and investment is provided for preservation and tourism activities.

Just a short walk outside of Jardin Colombia is some of the best hiking in Colombia.

We think it’s a dream hiking destination because of its virtually untouched pathways with few tourists, a glimpse of local life as you walk through farms and small villages and some spectacular waterfalls and caves. There are excellent day hikes in Jardin to see: El Salto de Angel Jardin A waterfall in dense jungle with a 50-meter drop and the Cueva de los Guácharos a spectacular cave, perfectly carved by the flowing river watersPreviously we did the hike to La Cueva Del Esplendor – another fantastic hike into caves, however, it is on private land, and due to erosion it is still closed for tourists. This is just a small glimpse of the many options for hikes outside of Jardin, each with its own set of jaw-dropping views of the town on the way down.Birdwatching and Jardin Coffee tours are other top things to do in this laid-back town or for some adventure there is paragliding, and Caving and rappelling.

How to organize hikes in El Jardin Antioquia:

You need to hire a guide to do these hikes. We recommend Jardin Eco Tours – who run all kinds of hiking tours.

Where to stay in Jardin:

Apartamentos Primavera – Jardin has apartment style stays! These are perfect if you want to stay for a longer period. They are super spacious, with all the comforts of home and kitchen (even a microwave). We recommend staying in the upper level apartments instead of lower street level. Hotel Kantarrana Urbana Jardin – This place has a lot of character. Cozy rooms, and breakfast included. It’s perfect for a couple night’s stay max (the standard rooms are a little small otherwise). But there are places to sit and enjoy their gardens, and it’s just a couple blocks from the main square. Check here for the latest prices.

Hotel La Casona – Well-priced guest house with comfortable rooms. The courtyard is lovely with lots of places to relax. It’s a great location since it’s only a few blocks from the main square. Check here for the latest prices.

Finca Mariposa Jardin- Just 15 minutes out of town, rent a fully-working coffee farm house. Traditional home, with modern conveniences with expansive views of mountains and coffee farms all around the home.  Check here for the latest prices.

How to get to Jardin:

How to get to Jardin from Medellin:

From Terminal Sur – Catch a Jardin bus it takes 3-4 hours depending on traffic and costs around 40,000 pesos. Rapid Ochoa Jardin bus company is a great option. (check for latest pricing) How to get to Jardin from the South (From Manizales and the coffee zone)This way is a little more challenging.
